I own 20 to 25 opera CD's, no DVD's, although I would probably enjoy the visuals if I had them. I listen to one per month or so, all the way through but not necessarily all at once. Attention varies from background to sitting and following libretto as it plays. I cannot ignore some of the really "pretty parts" no matter how many times I play them.
I am usually thrilled by Verdi and Puccini, but do not enjoy Fidelio or any of Mozart's, although I love all their music otherwise.
Seeing one performed is a spectacle that cannot be approached at home.
