It was superb. Great piece, beautifully done, in a spectacular space. Kudos to countertenor Jeffrey Mandelbaum, whose performance was exquisite.
I did think Jonathan De Vries' tempi were slow, but then found myself toe-tapping. Toe-tapping to Handel. He, and everyone involved in this, managed to deliver a very cohesive piece, which isn't always the case with oratorio. (It can feel like "soloist showoff" followed by orchestral fill, then more soloist showoff, more fill, then chorus showoff - sort of an "anything you can sing I can sing better.")
It's not often that an audience on the way out is all smiles, but last night we were.
