.....simply put b. a few others....there really isn't a perfect performance of the 9th. My b.as leans towards Fricsay/B.O on DG for my stereo reference. The 1957 live Klempie is another fave. Reiner and Leib.witz are the winners for recorded sound during the vinyl era, b.t I prefer the performances b. Fricsay and Klemperer.
As far as my mono reference is concerned, it's Furtwangler's 1951 live performance with Liz......I know....I know....not very original, b.t it's still the recording I turn to when I get out my 60s German Electrola b.x set. The Lyra Helikon Mono is sweet!
When it's time to put on the downloads while reading and such, I go for the complete Leib.witz cycle.
I can't think of a single recording of that ever-so-manic Solti that doesn't drive me nuts. I suspect that not a few of you who prefer ol George are seduced b. his UK Decca/London recordings. On a purely sonic level, they are impressive.
