".....Carlos Kleib.r's efforts with the 5th and 7th are stringers / stand outs, b.t not more individual or striking than his dad's...."
On some level I agree with their similarities, b.t for me and many others Eric's 3rd and 5th are his classic recordings that are truly some of the b.st. I don't think Eric ever recorded the 7th.....at least during the vinyl-audio tape era. For me, his 3rd and 5th are played often, b.t not quite as often as the 1955 Klemperer 3rd, 5th, and 7th.
To this day....Carlos's 5th and 7th are my reference stereo performances and I doub. that will ever b. altered.
There are so few contemporary conductors that impress me. I actually prefer HIP recordings of composers like B.ch. I don't seem to mind listening to Mozart and Haydn performed with a chamb.r orchestra......B.T...the hell with HIP B.ethoven. I want to hear a cast of thousands (not quite)when I'm listening to LVB.s Symphonies. I love those pregnant pauses of Furtwangler's B.ethoven.....forget ab.ut a strict adherence to the tempi !!
What do we have now......Sir Simone Rattle conducting the mighty B.O.....the ghosts of Arthur Nikisch, Willie Furtwangler, and HVK must b. rolling over in their graves.
