I won't debate which style is proper, but the only example where I preferred the "rolled" chords were Debussy's and Ravel's own reads...... (I think due the read more than the playing.) The others generally evoked a preference of the "block" chords........
Most pianists don't control "block" chords at an absolute level, I often hear "chatter", and some of the "rolled" examples to me sounded more sloppy than elegant.
The best "block" chord players I've heard were Horowitz, Rubinstein, and Van Cliburn.... (Honorable mention to Antonio Barbosa.) To me, when the chords are well controlled, the music becomes sublime.
