RE: Alternatives to Sergiu Celibidache on Bruckner

Interesting that you should ask, since I'm now sort of in the middle of plowing through Bruckner myself. So, far, I'd say you'd probably have to go symphony by symphony individually to get the best performances.

Personally, I can't stand Celibidache. That's just my opionion; he seems to be quite popular with others. But, I think that the objections you're raising are probably 'cause you don't respond to Celibidache, either.

So far, I can tell you that you can't go wrong with Karajan in Bruckner. He does nothing wierd or eccentric, but he's not dull, either. In fact, he's got more of the mystery you speak of than anyone.

I'll be posting on Symphony #6 and #3 once I get some more listening wrapped up. For now, I can tell you that the Haitink/Vienna Phil [not to be confused with his earlier Concertgebouwe recording] for the 3rd is out of this world. Just incredible.
