Actually, Stereo Review took a similar approach in a humorous article which appeared back in the 60's or 70's: their approach was, which composer had the most recordings per number of works composed. According to this methodology, the greatest composer of all time was. . . Amilcare Ponchielli! (I think there were quite a few recordings of "Dance of the Hours" at that time!) I find it hard to argue with the result! :-)
