The most unusual choice to me, not only from the posts here but also the NY Times columnist, is that of Bela Bartok.
Now, personally, I love Bartok's chamber music, especially the string quartets which I think are really very fine indeed.
However, he wrote no symphonies, his concertos are not played in concert very much, altyhough that seems to be changing this year. I just saw his Viola Concerto performed by the Atlanta Symphony a couple of weekends ago. (A middling work, even with so few concertante works for viola. But maybe it was the soloist who left me sort of un-wowed.)
So, what music by Bartok are prompting you music lovers to listen to him so much, placing him in the top 10 composers you enjoy listening to?
