Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Have to disagree with this statement

"[Brahms] rarely uses counterpoint"

Brahms is easily one of the most contrapuntally sophisticated 19th-century composers and clearly studied and absorbed the art of Bach.

I agree with much of your post. Lists like this aren't particularly interesting but it's a good springboard for discussion. The negativity towards Brahms among classical music fans is really very surprising. Brahms is simultaneously emotionally powerful, a simply great writer of melodies, extremely sophisticated formally, a great contrapuntalists and someone who wrote in several genres with great success and very consistently good (Brahms destroyed much of his unpublished output, which he deemed insufficiently accomplished). He is even credited with significant influences on the composers who followed him. A great, great composer.
