Beethoven Quartets and LP vs. CD

PAINTING: "Dinner for Don Giovanni"

jult52,

I certainly understand those who object to Gould's playing. I'm just now having one of those small aesthetic crises when considering Cameron Carpenter, the current urbane rhinestone cowboy of the organ, who's making even Virgil Fox look quiet and sane. And, like you regarding Gould, I can see what Carpenter is after, the level of innovation, so I have to at least respect the effort.

LP vs. CD: As I revived after a long dormancy and made several changes to my system at once (placement, new stands, 10 tubes in the SP10, new speaker cables, new IC: TT > preamp, added McIntosh MR67 tube tuner to system), to see where I am, I've compared several LP and CD versions of the same recordings, Hurford's Complete Bach organ on LP with Hurford Bach highlights on CD- the same recordings transferred, Mahler Symphonies 4 and 5 conducted by Bernstein and Solti, and the Beethoven Late Quartets. I played some of these CD's and LPs for comparison for the friend with the Audio Research SP10 > VS55 > AQ Rocket 88 > Vandersteen 2CE Signature II system and the sense of refinement , image, natural timbre, and general attractiveness of the sound of the LPs was a reminder that digital has not achieved primary source level at least in the Bambi lair.

Consequently, in my evaluation mode, for my evening with the Quartetto Italiano and Late Beethoven, I was listening to both Philips LP's and the CD transfers. The LP's are a 10 disc set: "Beethoven: Complete Works for String Quartet": 6747 272 and I believe the recordings date from 1967 to 1972 and that I purchased the LP set about 1985.

The Philips CD reissue (of 1989: 426 050-2) is not bad. However, although I have never objected to the CD transfer sound quality, I find that I almost never listen to CD's of quartets when I can hear them on LP- the nuances, and some ambient sounds like bow and breathing, the depth, and dynamics all seem compromised on CD. Come to think of it, I almost always play the LP when I have the option.

The Quartetto Italiano is my reference reocording for the Late Qt. and I lean towards the Budapest for the early and the Vegh for the Middles. Overall, if I were limited to only one version of all of them though it would be by Quartetto Italiano. The Talich is very convincing too,and there are gems by The Busch and the earlier Julliard..

Cheers,

Bambi B
