I have the Knappertsbusch recording of the 5th on Decca too - and, like you, I enjoy it, despite the corrupt edition he uses. Same with von Matacic (but that's a different corrupt edition, as far as I can tell).What would be funny would be an "authentic" performance of one of those corrupt editions which calls for an additional brass band (shades of the 1812 Overture!) to be placed on stage but behind a curtain. At the great peroration at the end of the symphony, the curtain is to be raised and the brass band is directed to join the main orchestra. What a mighty noise (and audiophile treat) THAT would be! :-)
