Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Home sick, so I did a mini Bruckner fest...

I am reminded how hard it is to generate a critical list especially with Bruckner. I listened to three Bruckner symphonies, and that was probably one too many but..

4 I listened to Kempe, and think he was an excellent Bruckner conductor. His recording of the 8th is also very good.

5 I listened to Jochum on Phillips (Hi-Fi Stereo pressing). Good, but Knappertsbusch continues to be my favorite hear. Kempe was my first recording of the 5th, and I have never warmed to it.

6 My favorites here, by a long shot are the Furtwangler lacking the first movement (absolutely amazing sound quality considering that it was recorded during the war) Oh how I wish the first movement could turn up. The Klemperer is outstanding.

7 No current favorite

8. An unheralded choice: The fairly recently released live Barbirolli. I think it is a great recording. Other favorites include the second Karajan (the only Karajan Bruckner I really like), Mravinsky, Horenstein ("Clark" got that one right it is excellent), and Klemperer EMI (although he makes disfiguring cuts in the last movement. The first three movements are excellent).
Anf finally Schurict for both 8 and 9.

9. I listened to Jochum on DG. I found it disappointing. Guilini is my favorite here.

I also think Haitink is underrated especially for the early symphonies.
