... he was often superb in Bruckner. The 7th with Vienna is one of the supreme Bruckner recordings, IMO. For all the typical complaints about being "overly polished" and whatnot, you would think that HvK's critics would admit that Bruckner's works sound pretty good in the glorious, huge sound he gave them. I quite like his BPO Bruckner cycle, as well as 7 & 8 from Vienna.
That said, if I had to choose one Bruckner conductor, it would be Jochum. Both his Bruckner cycles are excellent, but I would give a slight edge to the one with Dresden, if only because that orchestra was so amazing during that era. As it happens, that cycle is available as a budget box from Brilliant Classics, so it's an easy recommendation, I think.
