RE: Ely Cathedral

cawson@onetel.com,

Yes, I long been fascinated by the lantern at the crossing- the quality of light filtering down to the floor is wonderful enough, but the delicate ribbing/vaulting amazed me every time I saw it. It's interesting how the light draws you to the crossing, and the nave is heavy/clunky Norman, but the beautiful and delicate lantern only reveals itself when you are in it and see the ceiling- very theatrical! I seems impossible to make a dull photo of it.

Whether visiting Il Domo in Florence, Beaubourg in Paris, I like to get up- or down in the works. Like you, I was never in the lantern at Ely, but have been all through above and below at Durham, another favourite cathedral, along with Salisbury, Canterbury, and Lincoln, and Oude Kerk, Amsterdam. It would be great to organise one of those special historic organ tours that also included visits up in the triforium and roof.

Cathedrals are immense fun and when I retire from designing houses, I'd like to have the job of Quasimodo at Ely- pretending to be deaf but sneaking down and playing the organ at night. -In this fantasy, Anne Hathaway plays Esmerelda.

Out of curiosity, when you say, "I was at school there for 3 years", do you mean in Ely- at whattzit- King's School, or down the road at Cambridge? (-I read architecture at Pembroke mid-late 70's.)

Cheers,

Bambi B
