cdawson@onetel.com,
Yes, I enthusiastically second a visit to Ely Cathedral. The tower at the transept crossing is wonderful. One Bishop of Ely was Christopher Wren's uncle and Wren was apparently influenced in his designs by Ely. The most impressive thing is that the relative scale of the Cathedral an the town of Ely must be similar to it's Medieval relationship- approaching from Cambridge the land is dead flat and the Cathedral looms above everything else.
If you had time, it must be a magical experience to visit by taking the River from Cambridge- which goes right round the back of the Cathedral. Despite a life-long interest in organ music- and having been to Ely 5 or 8 times, I never heard the organ. -That would be worthwhile.
And,I think if you're in that neighbourhood, the City of Cambridge is a don't miss- Trinity Library, King's College Chapel, the 10th Century "Round Church", the Fitzwilliam museum, and the River. Just walking the main streets of town weaving between the old colleges is fantastic. There are- or were 35 years ago!- piles of recitals almost every day in the colleges.
Here's wishing I were there !
Cheers,
Bambi B
