RE: Only three days ago I ordered Dowland's collected works

PAINTING: "Design for a Study for Gesualdo"

Bhasi,

The Rooley collected Dowland I think is not only all of Dowland, but as far as I can tell, uses performers of the top rank for this music and the recording quality should be good as well. I have individual LPs of much of Dowland, but again, it's always interesting to be able to hear the less often recorded/performed pieces. As much a fan of Dowland as I've been over the years, there will be quite a few new pieces to me on the Rooley set.

I do really recommend Sweelinck- whose complete known keyboard works may well fit on two or three CD's - if you're not as interested in harpsichord, there is a great interchange with his work between harpsichord and organ. Frescobaldi is just wonderfully lively- his Caprices and Tocattas, Fantasies- all interesting.

Froberger- who was influenced by Frescobaldi and is sometimes credited with the invention of the keyboard sonata, wrote some amazing pieces, especially the various "lamentations":

-I have the 4 volume set of Froberger - about 10-12 CD's total- of the complete works with Richard Egarr as well as a number of single records and individual pieces. One of the great early keyboard albums is Thurston Dart's old L'O Lyre LP on clavichord and the strange, impressionistic lamentations are especially effective. This was re-released on CD but in limited quantities- worth hearing if you see either the Dart LP or CD.

And, in the same vein, do you know the mannerist vocal works of Carlo Gesualdo? The madrigals border on the bizarre- wonderful twisting chromaticism:

Gesualdo was an Italian prince with an interesting non-musical history having caught his wife with her lover and murdered her and her lover with a sword- action madrigal composer!

Happy Summer listening!

Cheers,

Bambi B
