Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Only three days ago I ordered Dowland's collected works

Bhasi,

As it happens, I'm a big fan of the melancholic John Dowland. The lute songs, Lachrimae, lute solos- it's all wonderful. In the 80's I bought the Diana Poulton transcriptions of tablature to piano score and years ago I played a few pieces on the guitar. For a couple of years I've wanted the 12-CD set of his collected works with Anthony Rooley and co and decided to order it:

Knowing some of the individual performances on this set, my expectations are high that this will be enjoyable and there are a number of pieces I've never heard.

If you're a Dowland fan, you may like to listen to the contemplative keyboard pieces - "Lamentations" of John Jacob Froberger as well as the organ/harpsichord stylings of Jan Pieterzsoon Sweelinck.

Also, I found an astounding value at Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Gustav-Leonhardt-Jubilee-Box-Set/dp/B00186JBT6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1247962370&sr=1-1

- which is the Gustav Leonhardt "Jubilee Edition". A fantastic Sony Classics selection of the recordings of a great harpsichordist and the best part is 15 CD's for $19! I think this one is so good as to be really unavoidable by any fan of great harpsichord playing.

I have fond memories in 1975 of rushing from the Cambridge train station- I was just back from a month in Paris, to the Fizwilliam Museum and with my luggage in the seat beside me, listening to a programme of Frescobaldi amidst the Renaissance and Baroque art.

For good Summer listening, I particularly like contemplative composers such as the above, plus Chopin, Satie, and string quartets.

Cheers,

Bambi B
