PAINTING: "Design for a Monument (Washington)"
Mates,
I was never interested in Michael Jackson's music, but the World will certainly be a less interesting place without Michael Jackson.
If I were honest in my musical tastes, I would have to say that I am often intrigued by creative people if for no other reason that they have an interesting personality. Accordingly, my interest in Gesualdo, Froberger, Dowland, Chopin, Satie, Frank Lloyd Wright, Glenn Gould, Rothko, Francis Bacon, and Michael Jackson may be subscribed to that commonality of people who were if not trend-setters with genius for their craft and art were at least permanently circulating loons and never boring in their lives.
I'm one of the old-fashioned few that believes art emanating from people who have suffered is often wider, deeper, and more permanent. In my view, Michael Jackson is one of those extraordinary eccentrics that must have suffered in some enigmatic way with some deeply disguised paradoxical actions on some mysterious level. This makes him a prime suspect to be unpredictable and indeed that was an important contribution- he was so isolated I hope that he was also unaware that he became a safe target for ridicule of the cruelest kind. A person could allude to Micheal Jackson with carte blanche - child molester, drug addict, monstrous abuser of plastic surgery-, "he turned himself into a white woman", and so on.
All along, I thought this abuse was an example of those really American events: praising and pushing for individuality, initiative, and commercial success- only don't be too different, too inventive or overly successful or you'll be crucified for every fart and be accused of having married Elizabeth Taylor.
I say give a long leash and thanks to creative people like Michael Jackson (though they'll never anyone like him) alone to add colour to the drab drone of health care reform and the cooking pot revolution in Iran.
Next time I'm at the L.A. County Museum Eli Broad Bldg, in the Jeff Koons exhibit, I shall give the intricately carved statue of Michael Jackson in his Sgt. Pepper's outfit with "Bubbles" his chimp a hearty pat on the bum.
Mr. Jackson, we barely knew ye and your amazing show is over too soon.
Cheers,
Bambi B
