RBNG,
Yes, I can see that from your perspective you may feel that I am making a "character attack", and I'm sorry if my manner seems didactic or critical, but I would prefer to return the focus to your original question.
In my view the lecturer, myself, and several of the other posters in this thread have had simply the intention of steering you towards enjoying an art form that we enjoy. And, most opera fans understand that it can be off-putting for many people as it is so deliberately artificial. As I mentioned, I grew up with opera at home from birth and I still have to work at enjoying it fully.
And that is still my point- you ask why others enjoy opera while you don't, and my answer is that it does take some patience and liberation from preconceptions- such as whether devotees are gay, the subject of elitism, and social irrelevance- to understand. All art is elitist, probably most performing arts have a larger gay proportion than the general population, in what way are Mozart, Verdi, or Wagner relevant today, and in what way are the events and emotions of "Tosca" or "Butterfly" real- but who cares- what do any of those aspects matter? It's entertainment and thoroughly artificial. Like good science fiction, good opera has the overall effect of demonstrating what is real by proffering an elegant alternative universe!
You started out by seeming to want to enjoy opera or at least understand the enjoyment of it, so I would hope that you might attend another opera- and an especially accessible one like "The Magic Flute" in the Auden English translation, and come to a comfort level by the essential of experiencing it live and getting caught up in the typical audience mood.
Cheers,
Bambi B
