I've heard rumors that the withholding of performances from public availability is a clause in a union contract..... It seems to be in place with most major American orchestras. The European orchestras, on the other hand, are a lot more accessible. On YouTube, if you search for recent symphonic performances, it will be almost exclusively of orchestras from outside the United States. (The Berlin Philharmonic is using YouTube to market its new video releases.)
I personally think such withholding of recordings and video is choking off a potential new market for these American institutions. It's stifling exposure to younger audiences. And with the unprecedented fiscal crises a lot of them are currently facing, such restriction could ultimately be the core of their downfall.
