Many moons ago when working in college radio, the station had a promo copy of his "Suite for Jazz Piano and Orchestra(sic)." I dug it but haven't seen it since.
Last summer at a thrift I found a couple of his other records and have finally got around to cleaning and spinning. You never know what to expect with music you haven't heard in 20 years.
The best way I can describe Bolling's stuff is to call it a blend of late baroque/early classical and post-bop jazz. The record on right now is "Concerto for Classical Guitar and Jazz Piano," Bolling is playing the piano and Alexandre Lagoya is on guitar. The piece also features a bass and a trap kit.
The record is an early 80's CBS and probably the best sounding early 80's CBS record I've ever heard. It is well mixed and probably tracked live. The bass is deep and tight and the mids are clear and the highs glisten. Thumbs up to the engineer who recorded it. The pressing is dead silent.
The music is not bad. It might be a bit of nostalgia, but I'm starting to dig it. Although there are parts that get a bit swishy, overall it's pretty solid. I don't think Bolling will be remembered as one of the giants of the 20th century, but this music is worth a listen. Especially if, like me, you are fan of mixed idioms.
