The CBS recording you describe is probably the same that was included in the 2-CD Kaplan Mahler Edition (Conifer Classics 75605 51277 2). Disc 1 Track 8 is 22 minutes long and titled "Mahler Remembered", described as recollections of musicians who performed with Mahler, recorded in the early 1960s by musicologist William Mulloch.
The album is truly essential for Mahler fans. It also contains recordings of Mahler performing on piano rolls, a CD-ROM photo album, and Kaplan's recording of the 2nd Symphony with the LSO (a well-regarded performance though not as dramatic as with some other conductors). The album includes a booklet that contains letters by Mahler and essays about him, and a second booklet that contains the entire music score of the 2nd Symphony.
This album is now out of print but Amazon lists some used copies. Make sure that you get a full set with the booklets intact.
