Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

It's ok, Theresa and Hi-Fitommy have been amusing...

and just confirmed my point, which is that for some unfortunates, the sound or someone's arbitrary label as the best can be a good substitute for good music. If Theresa thinks Buddy Rich is "The Best", it's only her loss.

The whole Buddy Rich thing brings out another issue for me. Rich undoubtedly had a phenomenal technique, but was very one-dimensional. He played to show off the technique and himself, and the technique took precedence over the music, indeed, the technique was all there WAS to the music. He had virtually zero ability to play in circumstances where his drumming wasn't overpowering everything else.

That can have great entertainment value in a way, as a curiosity or a carnival sideshow type of thing. But it loses it's value once the novelty has worn off. The toughest thing to play, as any real musician or real music lover knows, is a single note - held for several bars - quietly. The toughest role of any musician is that of accompanist. And it is MUCH harder to play slowly than it is to play fast. Rich certainly had chops, but subtely wasn't exactly his strong suit. The real great musicians are the ones who convey a subtle palette of emotions, those who convey a message uniquely and beautifully. This is completely lost on the likes of Theresa and Hifitommy.
