never once did i 'equate sticker price to musical value and adopt sticker price as the criteria for musical value.' maybe even the opposite. the fact that AF is using the new, superior technology of dsd PLUS the backward compatibility of the redbook layer rather than only redbook and NOT charging $26 for them flies in the face of all that.
perhaps you never actually listened to the ritchie valens music, but those werent B takes. everything he did was hit material. and how did john lee hooker's work become 'far removed from the prime musical titles'?
your objections are baseless. an argument for the sake of itself. fine music performed consummately, captured in perfection by the recording team is a joy, no question. the planets by mehta and the LA phil is a perfect example of this. few of those are available in good shape and the ones that are prohibitively expensive in vinyl form. paying $30 for new vinyl reissue of that is understandable given the cost of pressing. put it on sacd hybrid for $16 and it would have runaway sales.
the idea is for sacd to proliferate and become ubiquitous. this is the sound quality we deserved instead of redbook. the rush to market was too rapid.
the fact that a small company can offer this newer, better technology for regular pricing at all is evidence that the big guys like jvc could stop gouging us.
