It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Revisiting the three Lee Ritenour D2D JVC recordings from the 70's

I started listening to these again and for me they hold up. The three are Gentle Thoughts, Sugarloaf Express and Friendship released in that order. Great rhythm sections on all with Anthony Jackson and Harvey Mason on the first, Abe Laboriel replaces Jackson on Sugarloaf and finally Steve Gaad replaces Mason on Friendship. Steve Forman plays percussion on all three.

Mason and Ritenour were on the great Sheffield Lab Discovered Again and Dave appears on two of the three and his brother Don and Patrice Rushen play keys as well. There are a mix of covers and originals including great remakes of a couple of Earth, Wind and Fire tunes and Gentle Thoughts is a Herbie Hancock tune.

For me there are a lot more tunes I enjoy on the first effort and less as they went along. Lady Soul on Sugarloaf features nice work by Eric Gale on guitar along with Lee and a nice solo by Patrice.

And then there is the hi-fi factor. These really sound nice. Great dynamics and really punchy bass. The first two minutes or so of the tune Gentle Thoughts at high volume is nothing short of breathtaking IMO. These were all recorded direct to disc, vinyl versions are best but the JVC CD's aren't too bad, less tape noise than the Sheffields but not as good as the Crystal Clear CD's on Laserlight that were made from the master lacquer not a tape.

So if you run across these try them out. Sure some borderline muzak-like renditions of Feel Like Making Love for instance but maybe you like that laid back stuff. Give em a try.
