I'll clarify: the bass panel resonance, driver efficiency, and crossover are together designed to produce a bass boost. The actual boost comes from the first two; the crossover helps control its shape (as suggested by my analysis on two-way Maggies, and your analysis on three-way Maggies). The main advantage of electronic EQ is that it can control the shape of the bass boost independent of the crossover frequencies. I agree that its not possible to extend the extreme low frequency response without the panel becoming likely to hit the magnets.
