I think the amp's output impedence is the biggest variable. On the MG1.6 it takes only 0.2 ohms to emphasize the midrange by 0.5dB relative to the bass and treble.I now better understand the Maggie design - the crossover introduces a bass boost (the bass panel is more efficient than the tweeter). Together with the bass panel resonance, the bass boost helps overcome dipole cancellation. An amp with significant output impedence turns the electrical bass boost into more of a midrange boost. So depending on the output impedence, one can get either strong bass (as the speaker is designed), or a slightly-emphasized midrange (with a tube amp or series resistor), or anything inbetween.
I've been toying with the idea of electronic bass equalization to do more than what's possible to do in the crossover. No concrete plans yet.
