amplifier's output impedence

As Leisure7 and mkmelt noted, the problem is due to the tube amplifier's output impedence.

I would like to add that the biggest factor is the 2-way Magnepans have a large impedence rise in the crossover region due to the electrical behavior of the crossover. The impedence rise leads to a midrange emphasis with a tube amplifier. This is a well-known effect: Stereophile regularly measures amplifiers with a simulated loudspeaker to show how it alters the frequency response.

The second factor is that the tweeter in most Magnepans has lower resistance than the bass panel, so the tweeter is attenuated more by an amplifier's output impedence. This is why the highs were gone.

No post from me would be complete without mentioning my MG1.6 Mid-Boost Mod which uses series resistors to alter the frequency response in a desirable manner.
