Here's a quick explanation.The speaker cables add capacitance at the amplifier output. The capacitance creates a "pole" which causes the signal to lag. Too much lag, and the amplifier's negative feedback turns into positive feedback, creating an oscillator. The oscillations typically occur at a few hundred kilohertz, and can destroy output transistors and tweeters.
Fortunately, stability shouldn't be a problem in any well-designed amplifier.
