Did you buy new or used? If used, check that the biwire jumpers are in place and that the tweeter fuses aren't blown.

The MG1.6 isn't dark sounding. As Arbelos mentioned and I've documented in the archives, amplifier output impedences above ~1 ohm have the effect of emphasizing the midrange.
