First, some recordings are just plain bright. Its rare to find vocal recordings that haven't been equalized (by emphasizing the treble and/or cutting the bass).Secondly, the RS meter has been observed to have a peak around 5KHz . I don't own a RS meter, but I have an inexpensive condenser microphone that exhibits a similar peak.
Also, measuring a planar is tough. The Stereophile measurements imply the MG1.6 has a shelved response above 2KHz, but that doesn't correlate with what I hear.
All that being said, I played with tweeter resistors for a year before concluding that tweeter resistors alone couldn't correct the tonal balance. So I experimented with crossover mods and found that the MG1.6's tonal balance could be improved by emphasizing the 400-800Hz region . In the latest version, I'm using 2.0 ohm resistors in the tweeter section and 1.5 ohm resistors in the woofer section. In addition to the +2.5dB midrange emphasis, this version has a -0.5dB treble shelf which makes the MG1.6 somewhat dark sounding, but more forgiving of bright recordings.
So far I haven't convinced other inmates to try my mod, but you may want to consider it since you're starting down the same road I did and for $2 in resistors, the effects are as dramatic as getting a new pair of speakers. Please post whatever you try!
