I've owned 1.6s for a year now, long enough to understand their strengths and weaknesses. This is my first planar. I can see two reasons why people become dissatisfied:1) Pop and rock music generally sounds bad on Maggies. This is not the fault of the speaker, but rather the mixing, equalization, and compression in the recording. Maggies are capable of completely lifelike sound with minimally-miked acoustic recordings, but when fed a recording that's been manipulated, the resulting sound is artificial and un-Maggie-like. In some cases, the effect is like listening to the sound of an AM/FM radio reproduced through a Maggie.
2) The line-source tweeter is quite directional. Stand up and the treble goes away. This is not a serious problem, but something that dome tweeters don't exhibit.
Contrast the weaknesses against the strengths - last night I was listening with the lights turned out, and the sense of being in the same room with the performers was just uncanny. That's bliss.
