what a difference 0.7dB makes!

I've been running my 1.6's with 0.39 ohm tweeter resistors left over from my amp project. This attenuates the tweeter by ~8% or -0.7dB.

So to recalibrate myself, I spent a week listening without the resistors. Here are my impressions:

Without: crisp Maggie highs. Cymbals shimmer. Trumpets bite. Holographic imaging. Somewhat "forward" sound, most noticable on vocals. Its as though the QR tweeter sometimes calls attention to itself. Minimally-miked recordings sound believable, but pop/rock tends to be unlistenable.

With: overall warmer sound with slightly subdued highs. The "edge" is gone. Cymbals still shimmer, but are not as "in-your-face". Vocals sound fuller, more natural. Imaging is not quite as holographic, but still much better than a box speaker. There seems to be a more equal balance between "bright" and "dull" recordings. Pop/rock is much improved.

So, 0.7dB can really change the character of the speaker. I'm thinking about experimenting with smaller resistor values, noting that the amount of change is within the manufacturing tolerances of the drivers. Has anyone else tried this?
