RE: My Quad 2912 "pops", any hinsy why?

If it starts up again, you could take off grill cloth etc., get it as dark as possible, look from both front and back of speaker, watch for arcing, to see where it is coming from. I typically just listen with my ear close to the speaker, and a lot of patience.

Humidity tends to increase the arcing for obvious reasons. What happens sometimes is that the arc burns off dust or whatever it is between diaphragms and stators. So it may have been when you upped the humidity it burned off. But be warned when they do arc, it can put a pin hole in a diaphragm that may eventually rip. Regarding the five or six seconds, it sounds like the pop/arc pulls down the high voltage, which gradually builds until it is high enough to arc again. If you want to experiment with this, if you have the problem again, use a variac on that speaker.
