Series or parallel, it doesn't make the speaker any harder (or easier) to drive.
Series crossovers will generally have a flatter impedance curve which might make them preferable for a high-ish output impedance amp.
The reason Magnepan has switched to series xovers is because the component values become somewhat smaller and can fit the narrow thickness of baffles better. Other than that, there are no advantages to series crossovers at all. The trade-off preference always benefits a parallel configuration......all other things being equal.
