No, you can't achieve it externally because the filter needs to be on the downstream side of the series inductor.
If bi-amping with a line-level crossover, the setup is completely different and you have much more control. However, in that case, you'd still have to break into the system and disable the existing crossover.
The way I did it is the simplest modification possible that solves the problem.
