RE: Amp for 3.7i maggies

Sounds like you've pretty much made up your mind. I'm sure that the Theta Prometheus mono blocks are great and having read several of the professional reviews, you should be happy (500 wpc into 4 Ohms is better than what your Yamaha could muster). New, they seem a bit pricy to me, but given the tech involved and high praise they've garnered, probably worth every penny. That said, if you're not 100% sold yet, you might want to look at differences between various amp technologies and what manufacturer's offer as warranties, trial periods, etc.

For example, the Theta manufacturer's warranty is 5 years and transferable, so resale value should be great during those first five years of ownership. Non-transferable warranties probably hurt the resale value of most amps, which may explain why Roger Sanders' amps don't hold quite as much resale value on the used market. I know that Class D amps have improved greatly since Wendell discouraged the technology, preferring Bryston and other Class A/B topologies in Maggie demos.

Before settling on my Sanders Magtech ...which I got on 30 day trial... I briefly had my second system's Quad amp (A/B topology) with similar power specs to your Yamaha driving my Maggies. It sounded quite good ...warm sounding, slightly rolled off in upper frequencies, but ran a bit hot (my listening room is large requiring more power to reach desired SPL). Note: After purchasing my Sander's amp the thermal transistors required replacement due to an unforeseen issue from Sander's supplier Motorola. Roger had my amp back in a week and I haven't had another issue in over four years.

Under the mistaken assumption that my Sanders' amp would be in the shop awhile I purchased Wyred4Sound SX-1000R Class D mono blocks and used them with my Maggies (keeping them in my system for six months before reinstalling my Sanders Magtech).

Price-wise the W4S mono blocks were a steal although I was happier with my Magtech back in place (the Magtech idles cool and can be left on 24/7/365). The Wyred4Sound amps were a quarter of the weight and had lots of power (1100 wpc into 4 ohm loads), good damping and ran cool, but they sounded a bit more analytical (cooler) too.

Please keep in mind I'd never encourage or discourage consideration of such a crucial investment in one direction or the other as there are numerous cost and component matching considerations involved. It just seemed that these thoughts might be worth sharing in any pursuit of better sound. The journey is always an adventure.

Cheers,
AuPh
