I paid $650 + $65 shipping 9 months ago.
LRS are beyond any doubt truly marvelous.
They take a while to break in. They are very finicky about positioning.
You should replace the steel jumpers with some copper ones from a reputable manufactuer. I bought mine from Anticables for about $40, I think.
If you like them and plan to keep them, you may wish to purchase better
stands, as others have suggested.
If you REALLY like them, consider returning them within the free trial
period and purchasing a pair of 1.7i for $2200 from a dealer. Or, keep
them a while, and resell them for nearly what you paid after you have
purchased the 1.7s (or 3.7s even!).
As re: amplifier power. I'm presently driving mine with a 100wpc
Cronus Magnum 2 tube amp. It works fine in a large room. I have
new amps on order and we shall see what difference they make.
Good luck.
PS - Magnepans work best with acoustic music; if you play rock/metal
at loud volumes, look elsewhere for speakers.
