Even if expense were not a factor, it would still be one of the worst materials they could select for this application. (Assuming they continued to construct the transducer units with the same design.)
Bending properties and modulus of elasticity characteristics would create all sorts of issues....that they don't have now.
Some of his outlandish claims notwithstanding, the infamous Mr. Peter Gunn was on the right track with the recommendation for hardwood framing materials. Fir or pine or similar are much preferable to plywood/MDF in this context. And also easily available, and at relatively low cost for the DIY-inclined.
