It shouldn't be surprising. That scheme (used by SL in the Audio Artistry and Phoenix systems) was equalized all the way down to 10Hz. It's just a matter of how much cone excursion you want to trade-off to achieve it.
I'm not wild about the Ripole design either, but the Linkwitz W-frame scheme is a superior configuration that works extremely well in all cases. And utilizes the even-order distortion-reducing and force-cancellation schemes.
My own setup is similar, but I use stacked enclosures with four 12" drivers on each side. Eight drivers total.
