The Maggie ribbon tweeter is a ribbon. What makes it a ribbon for me is that it is LOOSELY suspended between the top and bottom of the frame with NO attachments to the sides. The ribbon floats in a magnetic field and is completely controlled by the magnet. There is no mechanical suspension.
All other designs, whether they have a substrate or not and are clamped tightly on all 4 sides are planar drivers and NOT ribbons. This includes electrostatics. They are not as linear as ribbons since their tautness resists their displacement mechanically so they can't follow the signal absolutely. This problem is mitigated by large area so the mechanical restriction has very small affect but as displacement increases the affect increases nonlinearly.
