Are you completely dismissing the idea of adding a sealed box sub to extend bass? I think a sealed powered sub of sufficient size might be more efficient and less costly.
Integration of one or more sufficiently powered, sealed subwoofer(s) to extend the bottom end another octave should be fairly easy to achieve through optimal in-line positioning with your Maggie's, and somewhat easier to accomplish than the more complex positioning and integration of dipole Maggie bass panels cobbled together from another system.
For instance, on my 3.7i rig I've incorporated a single centered Hsu Research powered sub (ULS-15) set to kick in via high pass filter at around 40 Hz, Maggies running full range. There's very little mid-bass hump or overlap as the 3.7i's roll off at around 30 to 35 Hz. The added bass adds real visceral slam that doesn't feel disconnected in any way.
I'm persuaded that adding larger dipole Maggie panels to extend bass would involve a lot more positioning and provide less cohesive benefit to the bottom end. IOW, you might get a bit more bass with the addition of Magneplanar panels, but not noticeably lower bass.
This is just a personal opinion based on experiences with my own system. I don't have a degree in physics nor the inclinations of a DIY experimenter. My love is music reproduction and listening enjoyment. While not personally interested in upgrading or tweaking I'm fascinated by those who achieve good results with it.
Others here may very well have achieved satisfying results integrating bass panels into an existing system. I'm not contesting those efforts, but I'm extremely happy with the results I've achieved over the past five years with my 3.7i system supported by a 15" Hsu subwoofer. For my part, this is just a different flavor of icing on an already delicious cake.
Cheers,
