RE: Hypex NC400 class D amps

Sorry for the confusion, Davey. White Papers tend to be tedious for those of us who aren't electrical engineers. My understanding is that the Sanders Magtech amp is indeed more efficient than other Class A/B biased amps, but Roger Sanders would be better able to explain his design philosophy. The line voltage regulation is what I was trying to reference. It's that efficiency that allows the Sanders Magtech to output such high wattage in a stable amplifier backed by a lifetime warranty.

Yes, there's more power consumption with A/B topology than amps designed around Class D. ...like you said, no free lunch. The Magtech is like a meaty full coarse meal that doesn't burn calories at idle. It's closer to gourmet cuisine! Naturally Class D can achieve greater efficiency at lower cost & less weight. Do they sound better? I'd say they sound different, neither better nor worse, but that depends entirely on wattage supplied, your listening tastes and the source components feeding your amp(s)..

I'd highly recommend Class D amplification to those on a tight budget. Class D amps that have been tested as working well with Maggies are exceptional, but as you've pointed out, there's no free lunch.

Cheers,
AuPh
