The aluminum wire and foil need to be thin for low mass. You don't want anything heavy on the panel.Also, the resistance of both woofer wire and tweeter foil is tightly controlled to 4 ohms. If they were thicker, the resistance would be lower and the speaker would need a transformer to drive it.
