Two years after hearing the big Tympanis I was introduced to JWC, former TAS reviewer and heard his Dayton-Wrights. While not as *big* sounding as the TIIIs, I discovered the notion of coherency and was transformed. A couple years later, JWC got a call from a gentlemen who had the HQD system and invited him to hear them. He asked me to join so I went along. They were nice, but just didn't have the impact of the D-Ws. He also had a pair of Beveridges for review for a while. They did some things nicely, but I wasn't impressed with the hybrid cone woofer design.
I guess I'm not as much for 118 db "crests" as wanting the opposite direction. I considered 20.1s when I purchased the U-1s in '05. They also lacked the kind of coherency I've become used to and lost resolution at the ppp end. I later heard 3.7s at Sea Cliff and found they were an improvement overall, if not lacking first octave bass.
I presume the bigger dot sevens are better in that respect, but I do so love the coherency of a single panel driver. :)
