Perils of room design. Room is built to the "Golden Ratio" but the final results were not as expected.
You may have found the sound stage too narrow because the speakers are too big for the room. Gary Koh's minimum room width recommendation for the Genesis 1.2s, the successor to the IRSs, is 19 feet. This room is 15" wide.
I found it interesting that the huge built-in bass traps in the back of the room did not work as expected and they had to move the listening position to smooth things out.
Here's a great video by Floyd E. Tool that covers subwoofer placement at about 30:00 and room dimensions at 42:00. Some of this is home theater oriented but never the less fascinating.
