In most preamps the load is after the selector switch, so the disconnected input is a disconnect, not a load. Tape monitor loops may have a load on the tape input, which is what he was preferring to use. So in that case, we have the situation I referenced earlier, of current split into the two interconnects so that the one is modulating the current into the other. Still neither IC is anywhere near independent of the other. This is not to say they are identical, just that they would not sound as they do on their own.
It bothers me that you don't see it.
