The "Y"ing scheme is not invalid assuming the source has sufficiently low output impedance to make the added capacitance insignificant...
Switching between one input with 626 pF of capacitance and another input with 626 pF of capacitance is NOT the same as comparing one input with 74 uF of capacitance with another input at 510 pF. Did you follow my link?
My opinion stands on how utterly stupid that suggestion is - if the objective is truly to *compare* one cable (by itself) with another.
