RE: I refer to lack of crossovers/frequency specific drivers

The original Quad does not really have crossover network. A filter network would be a better description. The central strip of the tweeter panel runs essentially full range. The outer tweeter strips full range but does have a filter to cut off the HF above about 3kHz. The tweeter panel does have a filter to roll off the bass below 200Hz or so but this is well outside the pass band of the driver

The bass panels have no filter. The inductance of the transformer bass windings rolls off the HF. The blend between the 2 panels is around 1.2Khz but this range overlaps quite widely. Even at 1' back it is hard to hear the various drivers.

The ESL-63 has no crossover really just a delay line assembly with each successive ring rolling off more of the HF. Even at extremely close range one will not hear the various rings.
