Hey Kent

I tried out nearfield listening with the Sound Labs this weekend. I experimented with a couple of more aggressive toe in approaches. Too much had a negative effect on bass linearity and got thick sounding. I settled with slightly more toe in than I've previously used. And left it there.

Moved the ottoman up close and listened to a range of recordings, both very good in terms of natural depth retrieval and others with the more common multi-miked shallowness. Honestly, the result was that it flattened the apparent size of the stage. I understand that a goal of the nearfield experience is to remove the room from the equation. For my environment, that had a negative effect. Dipolar radiation in my pretty controlled room results in a larger apparent space, regardless of the recording. It sounds much bigger at my usual listening distance than up close and personal. Nearfield is more like listening to headphones which I've never found as satisfying to reproducing the space of a concert hall.

I suspect success with this approach is highly sensitive to the speakers used and the room. Thanks for the suggestion and as I indicated, I left the speakers slightly more toed in than before.
